Leg day is most guys’ least favourite day, and that’s exactly why skipping it costs you the most. Big muscle groups mean a bigger stimulus for growth, better full-body strength, and a physique that doesn’t look like it stops at the waist. Here’s a proper leg day workout you can run once or twice a week.
The Workout
Warm up with 5-10 minutes of light cardio and a couple of bodyweight squats and lunges before loading any weight.
1. Barbell Back Squat – 4 sets x 6-8 reps
The main lift. Feet shoulder-width, brace your core, squat until your thighs are at least parallel to the floor. Drives quads, glutes and hamstrings harder than anything else on this list.
2. Romanian Deadlift – 3 sets x 8-10 reps
Soft knee bend, hinge at the hips, bar stays close to your legs. Targets the hamstrings and glutes and builds the posterior chain your squat depends on.
3. Walking Lunges – 3 sets x 12 reps per leg
Holding dumbbells at your sides. Unilateral work like this exposes and fixes side-to-side strength imbalances a barbell squat can hide.
4. Leg Press – 3 sets x 10-12 reps
A safer way to pile on extra quad volume once your lower back is fatigued from squats and deadlifts.
5. Seated or Lying Leg Curl – 3 sets x 12-15 reps
Isolates the hamstrings directly – the muscle most leg workouts under-train relative to the quads.
6. Standing Calf Raise – 4 sets x 15-20 reps
Pause and squeeze at the top of every rep. Calves respond to higher reps and time under tension more than heavy singles.
How Often Should You Train Legs?
Once a week is enough to make progress if you’re new to training. If you’re more advanced, splitting this into two lighter leg sessions a week – one heavier, one higher-rep – will usually build more size and strength than cramming everything into one brutal session.
Legs not the only body part you’re neglecting? Check our Bulgarian split squat guide for a unilateral finisher that exposes weak points a barbell squat hides, and use our bulking calculator to make sure you’re eating enough to actually grow from all that squatting.
