What is HYROX?
HYROX is a fitness race run the same way everywhere in the world: eight 1km runs, each followed by a workout station, so results can be compared between cities. The stations are the SkiErg, sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jumps, rowing, farmers carry, sandbag lunges and wall balls. Our guide to all eight HYROX stations, in order covers each one and how to pace it.
The divisions explained
- Open: the standard race and where most first-timers start.
- Pro: the same race with heavier station weights, for experienced racers. This is the division with World Championship qualification slots.
- Doubles: two people share the stations but both run every kilometre. Open and Pro versions, for men’s, women’s and mixed pairs.
- Relay: a team of four, each doing two runs and two stations.
- Adaptive: divisions for athletes with a disability.
Spectators: what you need to know
Your race wristband gets you into the venue only on the day you race. To come in on any other day, or to bring friends and family to watch, you need a spectator ticket, sold through the same ticketing page as athlete tickets on hyrox.com.
Getting there and race-day checklist
- Venue: MCEC, 1 Convention Centre Place, South Wharf. See the MCEC website for transport and parking.
- Bring photo ID to check in. You can’t check in on behalf of someone else.
- Start list and technical briefing: HYROX posts these online in the days before the event.
- Volunteer: HYROX recruits a Race Crew, who get AU$150 in HYROX vouchers, crew kit and a close-up view of the racing.
How to get ready in nine weeks
If you’re racing in December, you have about nine weeks. Our free eight-week HYROX training plan for beginners fits that window exactly: start it by 14 October and you’ll finish it in race week.
- Run more than you think: there’s 8km of running between the stations. Keep easy runs in every week.
- Practise compromised running: run straight off a hard station, because that’s the race. Our HYROX workout has a version for a normal gym.
- Learn the stations: practise every station at race weight, especially the sled push and wall balls.
- Build a proper program: see HYROX training: how to actually build a program.
- Respect the heat and the effort: seven people were treated in hospital after HYROX Perth. Pace yourself, hydrate and stop if something feels wrong.
HYROX in Australia
HYROX has grown fast here: HYROX Perth was forecast to grow four-fold to 11,000 competitors, and Melbourne drew more than 21,000 athletes in December 2025, according to the results site HYRESULT. Still deciding between HYROX and a box? Read HYROX vs CrossFit.
