Perth may be the world’s most isolated major city, but from 21 to 23 August it will not feel like it. More than 11,000 HYROX competitors are expected to descend on the city for eight kilometres of running, eight punishing workout stations and an industrial quantity of wall balls.
Organisers expect the 2026 edition of AirAsia HYROX Perth to be the city’s biggest yet when it takes over the Perth Convention & Exhibition Centre from 21 to 23 August.
This will be Perth’s third HYROX and is expected to be four times larger than the city’s debut event two years ago. The forecast comes from HYROX and should not be confused with a final starter or finisher count, but it still shows how quickly fitness racing has expanded in Western Australia, and Perth with indeed Perth, which recently had the opening of Chris Wilson Fitness Studio Nedlands 2.0—a flagship gym purpose-built for HYROX, strength, and conditioning

Perth’s race has quadrupled in two years
The Perth event will run across three days and include singles, doubles and relay divisions. Australasian Leisure Management reports that organisers expect a field more than four times the size of Perth’s first event.
That growth is not isolated. Sydney recently hosted almost 30,000 racers, setting an Australian participation record, while HYROX says its standardised race format now operates across 95 cities worldwide. What began as a relatively niche hybrid event has become one of the largest mass-participation fitness formats in the country.

What every competitor will face
The attraction is easy to understand. Every HYROX uses the same basic sequence, which means competitors can compare their time across events without wondering whether one course was substantially harder than another.
Each athlete completes a 1 km run followed by one functional workout station, repeating the sequence eight times. Weights and repetitions vary between divisions, but the total running distance remains 8 km.
- 1,000 m SkiErg
- 50 m sled push
- 50 m sled pull
- 80 m burpee broad jumps
- 1,000 m row
- 200 m farmers carry
- 100 m sandbag lunges
- 100 wall balls
The sequence makes HYROX look like a strength event, but running accounts for more of the race than any individual station. Athletes who attack the first kilometre as if it were a 5 km race often discover the cost somewhere between the sled pull and the burpees.
Both members of a doubles team complete every run, while the station work can be divided between them. Relay teams divide the race more substantially, making the event accessible to athletes who are not ready to take on the entire course alone.
There is a world championship route attached
Perth is also part of the qualification pathway towards the 2027 PUMA HYROX World Championships in Hong Kong. The championships will be held at AsiaWorld-Expo from 10 to 13 June 2027, marking the first time the event has been staged in the Asia-Pacific region.
HYROX says only about the top 0.5 per cent of athletes qualify for the world championships. Perth offers qualification opportunities through Pro divisions, Open divisions for athletes over 60 and selected Mixed Doubles categories, although competitors should confirm the exact slot allocation for their division on the official HYROX Perth event page.

What to do during the final week
With the event approaching, the training work has already been done. A final heavy sled session, full simulation or desperate 10 km time trial will create fatigue more reliably than it creates fitness.
- Reduce training volume. Keep some short, controlled running and movement practice, but avoid sessions that leave you sore for several days.
- Check your official start information. Confirm your wave, arrival time, check-in requirements and division rather than relying on a friend’s schedule.
- Review the movement standards. A no-rep at the wall balls or a penalty for completing the course incorrectly costs more time than a slightly slower station.
- Use familiar food. Eat a normal carbohydrate-based pre-race meal two to four hours before starting and do not introduce a new pre-workout or nutrition strategy on race morning.
- Control the opening kilometres. The first run should feel almost too easy. Settle into a sustainable rhythm before the sleds begin exposing every bad pacing decision.
Competitors who need more detail can use the final-week and race-day sections in our free eight-week HYROX training plan. At this stage, the plan is not to squeeze in eight weeks of work, but to arrive rested and use the pacing, food and station advice that still matters.
