Five men. Five different ways to train shoulders. Thirty days. One video promising to settle which method wins.
Browney’s latest challenge pits a daily 100-repetition grind against heavy low-rep training, high-rep pump work, a conventional beginner plan and a self-imposed daily overload experiment. The tidy takeaway is that the ordinary beginner won: his shoulder-girdle measurement grew more than anyone else’s. The honest takeaway is that the experiment was never built to crown a winner. It did find a clear loser.

The Five Plans
- At least 100 lateral-raise repetitions every day, no rest days, using light weights and improvised objects early on.

What Happened
Two of the five recorded no measurable change in shoulder-girdle circumference. The daily 100-repetition participant held at 130cm despite mounting fatigue, and his own account of barely completing one rep at 12.5kg by the end sits oddly next to his formal test, which still showed 15kg rising to 16kg. The heavy every-other-day lifter also held flat at 122cm; his final numbers, around 19 to 20kg per side, are solid, though the video never gives him a clean before-and-after.
Richard added 2cm and 1 to 2kg of strength. Browney’s brother added 1.5cm on the high-rep plan. Browney’s own daily progression added 1cm and roughly 2kg, though he was reducing load mid-set by the end as the plan became impractical.

Why the “winner” did not prove anything
Richard’s result looks the most convincing on paper and is also the most confounded. He was the only novice, and beginners typically add size faster than trained lifters regardless of program. He was also the only one who changed his walking and eating alongside the shoulder work, so none of the credit belongs to the training plan alone.
The measurement deserves scepticism too. A tape around the shoulder girdle picks up chest and back muscle, posture, hydration, glycogen and a recent pump, not just deltoid tissue. The clearest illustration: the heavy every-other-day participant measured 123cm at the day-15 check, then 122cm again on day 30. The tape did what tape measurements do.
Every method was tested on exactly one person, with no control group and no attempt to match weekly volume between the daily and every-other-day plans. That makes this closer to five case studies than an experiment, the same mismatch MFO already found in another viral train-a-muscle-every-day video, where the daily side did roughly 3.5 times the weekly sets of the twice-weekly side.
What the Science Says
The clear loser, unplanned 100 reps a day, fits a pattern the research already describes. A dose-response analysis across 67 studies found weekly set volume predicts hypertrophy far more reliably than how that volume is spread across the week, with frequency itself carrying little independent effect. Training daily is not automatically better; it only helps if it adds useful volume rather than fatigue.
The strength-versus-size split is not surprising either. A meta-analysis comparing loading ranges found heavy and light loads can build similar amounts of muscle, while heavier loads produce bigger maximal-strength gains specifically, which lines up with the heavy lifter’s strong numbers without a matching size change.
Training to failure every set, every day, is not the price of entry either. A review of training to failure found no consistent advantage over stopping short of it, and Browney’s own daily-failure approach cost him rest days, clean form and eventually his planned loads.
Practical Verdict
Nobody needs to copy any of these five plans exactly, including the “winning” one. What holds up is duller than a video thumbnail: train the muscle roughly two or three times a week, accumulate sensible weekly volume, work across a range of loads rather than fixating on one, and leave enough recovery that fatigue does not eat the results. Lateral raises alone are not a complete shoulder program either; a proper shoulder routine trains more than the side delts, and pressing and rear-delt work still earn their place.
If a lateral raise starts hurting instead of burning, that is a signal to change the exercise, not to push through it for the sake of a streak.
