For the first time, more than 3,500 Australians ages between 20-60 years old were asked their views on the chin, with 1 in 4 men saying their chin, jawline or neck are among the three facial features that contribute most to facial attractiveness. With this in mind we look into the power of the chin, break down the survey results and offer a potential solution to those looking to reduce their double chin.

In April 2017 Redefine did an online survey asking Aussies about chins, discovering that for both sexes having a double chin causes more concern than any other problem area on the face. “Bags under the eyes” and “Drooping mouth or jowls” were the the other 2 major concerns sited by the male group.

Some of the top tactics to mask a double chin?

  1. Avoiding selfies and photos, as well as mirrors.
  2. Wear clothing to cover the chin.
  3. Concealing the chin with their hand when speaking.
  4. Facial hair: 31% of men with a double chin will grow a beard to hide it.

An attractive chin = Confidence.

Most younger Australians surveyed believed an attractive chin profile conveys confidence, youth and a healthy weight. And with such powerful positive traits linked to an attractive chin profile, it’s no wonder a majority of those with a double chin feel the feature impacts them significantly. There can be a psychological toll of double chins on some. 39% of men report reduced confidence levels because of their double chin, a third say it makes them unhappy or embarrassed, and plenty of blokes thinking it makes them appear unhealthy or lazy.

What causes a double chin?

Head to www.nomoredoublechin.com.au and you’ll see ageing, genetics and weight are the three biggest factors to whether people have a double chin or not. And it certainly isn’t a gender factor, 34% of women and 24% of men report having a double chin with an overwhelming majority admitting they believe their double chins add to appearances of being over weight and reduce their self-confidence.

Introducing a new, non-surgical, injectable treatment option for “double chin” now available for use in Australia.

Australian men and women troubled by a double chin (also known as ‘submental fullness’) now have a new non-surgical option to help streamline their profile, with the inclusion of injectable treatment BELKYRA® (deoxycholic acid) on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods.1

The active ingredient of BELKYRA® is a purified, synthetic version of a molecule that occurs naturally in the body and aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat.1,2 When injected under the chin, BELKYRA® breaks down the fat cells in the treatment area, to improve the appearance of a double chin.5 Once broken down, the targeted cells can no longer store or accumulate fat.3,4

While many may associate a double chin with being overweight, in reality it can occur in both men and women of any body type, with ageing, genetics or a change in weight the main causes.6,7

Regardless of age and overall fat distribution, a double chin can make people feel they look older or heavier than they actually are, and often dieting or exercise will have little impact.7,8

A double chin can have a negative effect on a person’s day-to-day life, with some people feeling it affects their confidence and even their career.9
“BELKYRA® provides a customisable, non-surgical option to improve the appearance of fullness under the chin,” said Dr Steven Liew, internationally recognised plastic surgeon and founder of the Shape Clinic in Sydney.

All medicines have side effects. The most common side effects associated with BELKYRA® include pain at the site of injection, bruising, swelling, numbness, redness, tingling, formation of small areas of hardness, warmth and discolouration, and itching around the treatment area.1

BELKYRA® injections: The treatment process

The Belkyra treatment program involves a series of at least two separate sessions, spaced four to six weeks apart, requiring multiple injections. Each session typically lasts for 15-20mins. A thorough facial assessment prior to treatment enables a clinician to individually tailor a treatment plan to suit a patients anatomy and situation.
